Disney Names Lozano, Bryson to Board of Directors

Two new members have been named to The Walt Disney Company board of directors, it was announced today by Michael D. Eisner, chairman and CEO.

They are Monica Lozano, 44, president and chief operating officer of "La Opinion," and vice president of Lozano Communications; and John Bryson, 57, chairman and CEO of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, Edison Mission Energy, Edison Capital and Edison Enterprises.

The appointments are effective immediately.

"Two essential aspects of The Walt Disney Company's mission are effective communication with the public and responsible management of natural resources," Eisner said. "These two new board members bring an outstanding level of expertise in and understanding of these important areas.

"Monica Lozano is a strategic thinker who has greatly expanded 'La Opinion' and Lozano Communications through new initiatives and partnerships. She also has achieved leadership positions in many important outside organizations.

"John Bryson is highly experienced in business, law, finance, energy and especially in the economic and environmental aspects of effective natural resource management.

"These two new members of the board will complement the wide-ranging insights and expertise of the sitting board members who have helped guide our company to such tremendous success."

Under Lozano's leadership, "La Opinion," the nation's largest Spanish language daily newspaper, has received numerous national and international awards for its community service, its outstanding news coverage of issues affecting the Western Hemisphere and its reporting on social, civic and political issues.

She and her publication have been recognized recently by the State Bar of California, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Southern California Association of Governments. She was the architect of several strategic partnerships and initiatives that expanded the "La Opinion" brand and helped diversify Lozano Communications, Inc., the publication's parent company. These initiatives have moved her company into radio and television. She also increased "La Opinion's" circulation figures and advertising revenues.

Lozano is a trustee of SunAmerica Asset Management Corporation and the University of Southern California, and serves on the boards of the California Health Care Foundation, the Fannie Mae Foundation, the National Council of La Raza, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Appointed to the California State Board of Education last year and now its president, Lozano studied political science at the University of Oregon and holds an honorary degree from Occidental College.

Bryson, a graduate of Stanford University, holds a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Yale University. He has been with the Edison companies since 1984 and has served as CEO since 1990.

He was a co-founder and attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, chairman of the California State Water Resources Control Board, president of the California Public Utilities Commission, and later a partner in the law firm of Morrison and Foerster. He serves on the boards of directors of The Boeing Company, W.M. Keck Foundation, the Council on Foreign Relations, and is a trustee of Stanford University.

As chairman, president and CEO of Edison International, Bryson leads one of the largest electricity companies in the United States.

The seating of Lozano and Bryson brings the Disney board to 18 members. Lozano's father, Ignacio Lozano, plans to retire and will not stand for re-election to the board next year.
