Whooo! Whooo! Chug chug chug . Ahhhhh that wonderful sound of a live steam engine as it takes off down the tracks. That enjoyable sound seems to fill the otherwise tranquil air in a sprawling suburban neighborhood, nestled in the foothills of the La Canada/Flintridge area and thus we embark on our journey of celebrating 50 years of riding the rails with one of Walt Disneys Nine Old Men: Ollie Johnston.
This being a Carolwood Pacific Historical Society event, it included a luncheon at the Flintridge Inn, along with a morning and afternoon steam-up session at the Johnstons home. During the luncheon, the Society presented the Richard Thompson Outstanding Member Award and the Walt Disney Railroader Award.
The Richard Thompson Award was presented to Miguel Fernandez as Member of the Year. This award is given away in honor and memory of Richard Thompson, who was on the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society Board of Governors and is presented annually by Samma Thompson in memory of her husband.

Miguels contributions to the society included the design of society materials such as the official newsletter the Carolwood Chronicle and event tickets and other commemoratives, all of which have become highly collectible. He is also credited for creating the logo for the Johnstons miniature large scale railroad. In addition, Miguel is the architect of record for the relocation of Walt Disneys Carolwood Barn from the familys estate to the LA Live Steamers facility in Griffith Park. He spent numerous hours working on these plans and meeting with LA City Building Department Officials and the Barns contractor, Bill Abel.

The Walt Disney Railroader Award was presented to Ollie and Marie Johnston by Michael Broggie. This coveted citation is given annually and is in honor of those individuals and organizations that support Walt Disneys legacy of live steam railroading. Last years recipients of the award were the Disneyland Cast Members who work on the Disneyland Park Railroad. Some noted Disney legends were in attendance, Ward Kimball and the Johnstons next door neighbors; Frank and Mrs. Thomas and Tony Baxter.
