Each of these worlds contains a Keyhole. The Heartless enter the worlds through the Keyholes. Sora and his friends must defeat the Heartless Boss in each world and seal the Keyhole with the power of the Keyblade to stem the flow of the Heartless into that world. In this task they are aided by the Disney characters, and stymied by the Disney villains.

Sora, Donald and Goofy even change their appearance in certain worlds. Under the sea, Donald becomes a turtle and Goofy an octopus. In Halloween Town, Donald is a mummy and Goofy is Frankenstein's monster. The Heartless also have this ability. In Neverland they are pirates; in Agrabah guards; in Halloween Town ghosts; and under the sea they are jellyfish and missiles. Each world requires a different set of fighting skills to overcome the Heartless. And, of course, there are those Disney villains lurking about as well
