Metaverse, the virtual presentation of New York Comic Con, continues today featuring a wide array of panels looking at everything from comics and novels to TV and movies and everything in between. One of those panels focused on the upcoming major Marvel Comics event, “King in Black.”
- The “King in Black” Metaverse panel featured:
- Devin Lewis
- Writer Donny Cates
- Artist Ryan Stegman
- Cates referred to “King in Black” as the finale of the “Knull Trilogy,” with “Rex” and “Absolute Carnage” serving as the first two chapters.
- The writer also teased that, while “Absolute Carnage” caught Eddie and other characters off guard, “King in Black” will see Eddie completely prepared for Knull with a plan to stop him.
- Cates joked that they were being cocky three years ago when they introduced Knull with a three-year plan for the character, while Stegman laughed that the only thing his children have been impressed with is the fact that the character showed up in an animated series.
- Stegman pointed out how lucky he, Cates and their whole creative team are to be able to work on two major comic events back-to-back.
- Cates also pointed out the significance of the fact that their creative team has been the same since day one in regards to their work on “Venom.”
- Lewis mentioned just how formidable a foe Knull is, bringing a tremendous force of “not a couple hundred dragons but a couple hundred thousand dragons.”
- He also talked about some of the tie-ins and some of the characters we’ll see in this story, including Iron Man, Hulk and Black Cat.
- Cates warned fans to be sure not to read “Venom #31” until they have read “King in black #1” to avoid spoilers.
- He also pointed out that the “Venom” comics tying into “King in Black” will lean into the cosmic horror label they’ve been given.
- Cates teased a big moment in “King in Black” that will have fans taking notice of this mysterious new villain.
- “Theres a moment in issue one where, I think when it happens you’ll know what it is and it’s the moment where, if you haven’t been taking Knull seriously as a threat up until this point, you for sure will.”
- Finally, Cates teased that “the events of ‘King in Black’ change Eddie Brock in a profound way.”
- He also mentioned that the issue that follows “King in Black #5” will be “Venom #200” and will be “the beginning of something new, the beginning of something that you’ve never seen before from Eddie.”
- “King in Black” will be available this December.
