The Golden Globes air tonight on NBC tonight and I thought I would share my Golden Globe Awards ballot. Not that I have a real vote. (Who votes for the Golden Globes anyway?). The following is who I am rooting for in each category and why.
Best Motion Picture, Drama: Gravity. I am voting for this film because it is the one film in this category that I saw. I would have preferred the movie if it was title 9.8 m/s, but it gets my vote nonetheless.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama: Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks). Do I really have to explain this one?
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama: Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips). While Tom might not have been nominated for his performance of Walt Disney, I am voting for his other major film this year. Disney Legends tend to get my vote regardless of what they are nominated for.
Best Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy: Her. In this film Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his Siri-like operating system voiced by the Black Widow. Since Bob Iger is on the board of Apple I feel a certain affinity for Siri-like devices. Especially one voiced by a Marvel superhero.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy: Amy Adams (American Hustle). Did you really think I was going to pick Meryl Streep?
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy: Christian Bale (American Hustle). What can I say? I like Newsies. Seize the day!
Best Animated Feature Film: Frozen. If Despicable Me 2 wins I will never let it go. See what I did there?
Best Foreign Language Film: The Wind Rises. Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song will be released by Disney on February 21.
Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture: Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle). She is Mystique. So as a shape shifter she has an advantage when getting in character.
Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture: Bradley Cooper (American Hustle). Bradley voices Rocket Raccoon in Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Oddly, that is not the most bizarre character in the film. I AM GROOT.
Best Director- Motion Picture: Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips). He gets my vote because his last name reminds me of the Dick Nunis “Green Side Up” story.
Best Screenplay- Motion Picture: John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). I just feel it is time he gets the attention he deserves after not being recognized for his role in Undercover Brother.
Best Original Score- Motion Picture: John Williams (The Book Thief). I can’t wait to hear his score for Episode VII.
Best Original Song- Motion Picutre: Let it Go (Frozen). It is great to see a song from a Disney musical to make such an impact. With Frozen’s soundtrack number one, it feels like we are back in the Lion King days.
Best TV Series, Drama: House of Cards. This show is a Netflix original series. With Marvel recently announcing several programs to premiere on Netflix, I wanted to support this new way of making television.
Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama: Kerry Washington (Scandal). This show has become quite the success for ABC thanks to great word of mouth. Every episode is tweeted and shared amongst its fans who are affectionately called “Gladiators”. This season will be cut short due to Kerry’s pregnancy. Congrats to her!
Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama: James Spader (The Blacklist). The former star of ABC’s Boston Legal will be tackling the role of Ultron in the upcoming Avengers sequel. Perhaps the Age of Ultron will begin tonight with a Spader win. Submit or perish.
Best TV Series, Musical, or Comedy: Modern Family. Let’s hope the ABC hit continues to deliver. Perhaps they can do another Disneyland episode?
Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy: Zooey Deschanel (New Girl). Zooey performed 3 songs for 2011’s Winnie-the-Pooh which were written by Frozen’s Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Should I be concerned that my spell-check wants to change her name to Gooey Decanal.?
Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy: Don Cheadle (House of Lies). Don played Colonel James Rhodes in Iron Man 2 and 3. I can’t help but notice Terrance Howard was not nominated. Too soon?
Best TV Movie or Mini-Series: Behind the Candelabra: I am voting for this TV movie because I presume it is about the infinite hallway in the Haunted Mansion.
Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie: Helena Bonham Carter (Burton and Taylor). She is in all those Disney/Tim Burton films. Although it is a little confusing that she is in a TV movie with “Burton” in the title that is not dark and creepy.
Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie: Idris Elba (Luther). Idris appeared in the Thor films as Heimdall. I presume this is why he was nominated for two awards at this year’s Golden Globes.
Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series of TV Movie: Sofia Vergara (Modern Family). Not only does she star in ABC”s comedy hit, she also produces the new series, Killer Women. I wonder if the women are the ones that killed most of ABC’s fall lineup?
Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series, or TV Movie: Rob Lowe (Behind the Candelabra). He wins because he is the only person Doobie has a man-crush on.
