I am a fan of all things Disney but I have never been to a Disney On Ice performance. To be honest, the only times I am interested in anything to do with skating is hockey and the Olympics. But, now that I have kids, our children tend to come first.
When we learned that Disney On Ice: Treasure Trove was coming to town, it was a no-brainer that we would be going. On a recent Saturday morning, my wife and I were at the local sports arena with our four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son waiting for the magic to begin. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy came out to introduce the show by looking into the treasure chest on the ice. The characters pulled out artifacts from Disney animated films.
Before you knew it, Mickey and his pals were gone and the show really began.
We watched as Alice avoided getting her head lopped off by the Queen of Hearts and Captain Hook battled Peter Pan on the high seas of Neverland. Simba skated by trying to avoid the wildebeest stampede and we watched as Mufasa fell to his death saving his only son.
The performers came from all ends of the Disney movie universe. We watched as Snow White was offered the poisoned apple and fell into a coma. Rapunzel and Flynn Rider made an appearance too as they lit a lantern and sent it to the sky while singing “I See The Light”.
I have to say the show moved quickly and my kids got to watch a variety of characters act out the most popular parts of a dozen Disney classics. It was fun to see Tinkerbell fly overhead and then skate around during the pirate fight in the Peter Pan section. But there is not enough money in the world to have convinced me to be Jasmine or Aladdin and to fly around on a small magic carpet above the ice. Those two deserve danger pay.
The show wrapped up with all Disney princess characters skating around to “Someday My Prince Will Come” and Mickey and his friends thanking us for coming. My daughter was dancing in her seat, and my son was excited to see Mickey. They left with smiles on their faces. It was a great two hours for our family.
The actors who star in this show are quite talented skaters. I was amazed as many of them were dressed in these oversized costumes and masks that no doubt affected their vision, but still performed jumps and spins without incident.
Our total cost for the four of us was less than a hundred dollars. The best part was that I knew my family (both kids and adults) would enjoy themselves, and we did.
