Cynthia Erivo is set to star in and produce a remake of the 1979 classic, The Rose, for Searchlight, according to Deadline.

- Cynthia Erivo, star of The Color Purple on Broadway and National Geographic’s Genius: Aretha, is set to star in a remake of The Rose at Searchlight.
- The original film, released in 1979, starred Bette Midler as a self-destructive rock star who struggles to deal with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of those around her. The new remake from Searchlight will take a more modern approach on showing the high price of fame.
- Erivo is also set to produce the new film alongside Solome Williams, with the studio now looking for a writer to attach to the project.
- Erivo had her breakout role in performances in the West End and Broadway production, The Color Purple. She has also been seen in movies like Harriet and the HBO Series The Outsider. She had a notable turn as Aretha Franklin on National Geographic’s Genius: Aretha, and is also set to make an appearance as The Blue Fairy in the live-action adaptation of Pinocchio set for Disney+.
