Work Continues on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland

Construction on Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is “on track” at Disneyland Park in Mickey’s Toontown, and as such, the skyline and parts of the land are being drastically altered to make way for this stunning new attraction.

Though the Toontown Department of Implausible Deniability will have you believe that nothing is happening behind the walls, there is a gargantuan building taking shape and dominating the land.

In the context of the new attraction, guests will enter the El Capitoon theater for the premiere of the new Mickey Mouse Short, Perfect Picnic. However, the El Captioon doesn’t exist in Mickey’s Toontown….yet. Demolition has begun on the Toontown Five and Dime which will make way for the new theater that will serve as the entrance to the brand new attraction that is set to debut in 2023.

The area closed off in Mickey’s Toontown is rather large in scope (relative to the land of course), blocking off the bulk of Downtown Toontown from the exit of Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin to City Hall. Pluto’s Doghouse and the rest of the quick service offerings remain available as of press time, as does the Toontown Gazebo, Post Office, and Jolly Trolley Stop Photo Op/DVC Location.

These walls clearly aren’t funded by the Toontown Department of Implausible Deniability as they actually advertise that something is “Coming Toon,” featuring the concept art of the El Capitoon Theater, and promising a “Runaway Hit!”

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway opened in early 2020 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and wowed audiences with its brilliant blend of technologies to immerse guests in the world of the new Mickey Mouse shorts. The first ever ride-through attraction to feature Mickey Mouse takes a wacky and fun trip through Runnamuck Park, utilizing projection mapping, physical sets, and Audio Animatronics to create a living cartoon experience. Riders will hear sound effects that use devices and techniques developed by Disney Legend Jimmy Macdonald. Even the original whistle from Steamboat Willie was used again to record the attraction’s train whistle.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is set to debut at Disneyland Park in 2023.
