Beloved comic and actor Garry Shandling passed away today at the age of 66 according to Variety and other sources. Among some of his best-known work was sitcom It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, his late-night spoof series The Larry Sanders Show, and roles in both Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He will also appear in Disney’s The Jungle Book being released on April 15.
Shandling’s comedic style has had a lasting effect on pop culture. For example, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show was unique in the way it broke the fourth wall while the influence of The Larry Sanders Show can be seen in programs like Curb Your Enthusiasm. More recently, Shandling became a meme as his whispered “Hail Hydra” in The Winter Soldier was a source of parody.
