The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Disney is draining and filling in the 330,000-gallon Upstream Plunge pool at the former River Country water park.
Disney said it has no immediate plans to tear down any other remaining parts of the park, some of which can be seen from Bay Lake. Disney said the work had been planned for a while now.
River Country opened in 1976 adjacent to the Fort Wilderness campground. The park closed for its traditional winter refurbishment in 2001 and never reopened. Many believe this was a result of Disney World’s attendance downturn following 9/11.
There have been rumors of the property being redeveloped for a Disney Vacation Club Resort, but no official word has been released regarding the park’s future.
