With two full months left in 2016, The Walt Disney Studios have just surpassed last year’s record-breaking global box office haul. As of November 1st, the studio’s films have brought in over $5.8 billion worldwide, topping the previous record for a calendar set in 2015. Along the way has also set new records this year, becoming the fastest studio to hit $2 billion domestically, $3 billion internationally, and $5B globally this past July.
“For the second year in a row, The Walt Disney Studios has reached a new high at the box office thanks to an absolutely stellar collection of releases from Disney, Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “This success is a testament to the refined talent and innovative work the entire Studio team puts into making these world-class cinematic experiences.”
The success of 2016 can be attributed to hits like Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, Finding Dory, The Jungle Book, and holdover business from the massive Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Additionally, November’s Doctor Strange and Moana as well as December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story promise to add plenty to Disney’s already stellar box office year.
