UPDATE (5:07 p.m. PT): Variety has updated their story, retracting the claim the Disney Play was a working title for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. A note at the bottom of their original report now reads, “An earlier version of this story incorrectly cited Disney Play as a working name for Disney’s streaming service. ”
Previously:
According to a report by Variety, Disney’s upcoming streaming service will tentatively be known as Disney Play.
- This revelation came as part of a report on the new age of streaming and “How Hollywood Is Racing to Catch Up With Netflix.”
- Variety says Iger has referred to the service as “Disney Play” in discussing plans for the direct-to-consumer offering.
- Incidentally, the company recently debuted an interactive app called Play Disney Parks, featuring an icon that says “Play” with a Disney snipe in the corner.
- As we already knew, the article goes on to highlight how Disney Play won’t feature the same amount of content as Netflix but will also be priced lower than that service’s $8-$14 monthly fee.
- Among the projects lined up for the service are a live-action Star Wars series, the return of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, remakes of The Sword in the Stone and Lady and the Tramp, series based on Monsters Inc. and High School Musical, and much more.
- Disney Play — or whatever its final name may be — is expected to launch in 2019.
