As part of their ongoing series of art exhibitions, Disney TV Animation is celebrating Disneyland 60th Anniversary. According to the report in Variety, the topic really resonated with the artists:
“Among those contributing to the show was Eric Coleman, senior VP of Original Series, at DTV, who made a special trip to Disneyland to capture his photograph of a youngster encountering the park’s Evil Queen. “I was looking for a bigger picture that would capture the environment, and then I saw the Evil Queen and I knew a good moment was about to happen,” he said. The little girl came up to meet the queen with equal parts nervousness and excitement. “It reminded me a lot of what I felt like when I was at Disneyland as a kid; how everything felt just a little bit bigger than me.
Daron Nefcy, one of Variety’s 10 Animators to Watch and the artist behind Disney XD’s upcoming new series “Star vs. the Forces of Evil,” said her drawing of a tattooed and pierced girl enjoying fireworks celebrates the park’s inclusiveness. “I feel like everyone can go in and enjoy Disneyland, and I really enjoy seeing these people who are punked out or kind of gothy going there and having a great time like they’re a little kid. You can be super gangster and still go to Disneyland.”
“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero” co-creator Sam Levine’s offering shows his love not only for Disneyland but for 8-bit art, with a collection of Disney cast members that look a bit like old-school video game characters. “I love the different costumes of the different cast members. … I wanted to reduce them to their simplest essence and color, and see who people can recognize.” “
