A woman is suing Walt Disney World for over $15,000 in damages following an incident where she was attacked by a bird causing her to suffer a severe brain injury.
What’s happening:
- The Orlando Sentinel reports that a woman from Celebration, Florida is seeking over $15,000 in damages from Disney according to a suit filed in Orange Circuit Court last week.
- The lawsuit claims that Lisa Dixon was attacked by a bird at Walt Disney World, causing her to suffer severe brain injuries. Additionally, the lawsuit says Disney knew about the seasonal birds nesting in the area and the threat they pose to guests.
- The said attack happened when she was walking on a dock at the Polynesian Village Resort in May of 2017.
- According to Dixon’s lawyer, the attack caused her to suffer a traumatic brain injury and herniated discs in her neck.
- Schmitt says the bird “dive-bombed” her with similar force to being struck by a baseball and that she will require surgery.
- In addition to seeking monetary damages, the lawsuit accuses Disney of not keeping the dock safe, saying the failed to warn guests of the danger. Not having better warnings caused Dixon to feel a false sense of security.
- Schmitt notes that this incident has affected Dixon’s focus and personality, saying “it’s changed her life.”
- The Sentinel reached out to Disney and a spokeswoman for the company says Disney will handle the allegations in court.
What they’re saying:
- Thomas Schmitt, Lisa Dixon’s lawyer: “If there’s a company that’s well-versed in safety, it should be Disney.”
