Loryn Brantz’s Feminist Baby book series teaches kids that they can be anything they want to be. In the original book, kids were introduced to a toddler with a diverse set of interests that don’t adhere to any norms. In last years’ follow up, Feminist Baby Finds Her Voice!, the same toddler learns to find her voice. The newest installment, Feminist Baby: He’s a Feminist Too!, proves that anyone can be a feminist.
This boy feminist likes to play superhero, dance, dress up, chew on toys, knock things over, and share with friends. Through all of these activities, concepts are introduced to destroy toxic masculinity including teaching boys that it’s okay to cry and to stand up for what’s right, even when it doesn’t affect them. There’s even a tongue-in-cheek moment where he knocks down come Lego blocks where the text describes knocking down walls.
The Feminist Baby that fans of the series know and love makes a few cameo appearances in this book, and the unnamed boy in this story was featured as one of her friends in the previous two. It all serves to help underscore the fact that feminism takes many forms and anyone can be a feminist, regardless of gender or skin tone.
The charming illustration style is a lot of fun and Loryn Brantz adds a lot of appeal with her baby drawings which are 40% diaper, 60% kid, and 100% feminist. She has a lot of fun with colors as well, finding ways to include a wide variety that also mixes pastels with with bright and dark shades. The entire story is told in a poem through hand lettering by the author herself.
