Well, it finally happened! After 13 weeks at the box office, Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame bested Avatar as the worldwide highest grossing film of all time (before adjusting for inflation, of course).
Update (7/22/2019):
- As has become tradition, Avatar director James Cameron shared a congratulatory message with Marvel as Endgame takes the top spot in the global box office.
- In a tweet shared form the official Avatar account, a photo of Iron Man surrounded by Woodsprites was posted reading:
- “Ole Ngati Kameie. I see you Marvel — Congratulations to Avengers: Endgame on becoming the new box-office king. James Cameron”
- Earlier this spring, Cameron also congratulated the studio when Endgame passed Titanic’s overall take at the global box office.
What’s happening:
- Marvel is king of the worldwide box office! Avengers: Endgame edged past James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar to become the highest grossing film of all time.
- Premiering in theatres on April 26, 2019 Endgame quickly shot past $2 billion worldwide in just over a week and a half. But catching up to the visually stunning Avatar took a little longer.
- Since 2009, Avatar has had a firm hold on the top spot with its $2.789 billion gross.
- As of Saturday July 20th, Endgame was on track to bring in another $1.28 million domestically, and numbers reported on Box Office Mojo on Sunday, confirm that Marvel took the lead with a total gross of $2.790 billion.
- Avengers: Endgame is the penultimate entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Three, and closes out the story of the original six Avengers that took place over 11 years and 21 movies.
What they’re saying:
- During the Marvel Studios Hall H panel at San Diego Comic Con, Kevin Feige shared with fans the good news saying, “Thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all-time.”
- Deadline reports that Disney offered a statement as well.
- Alan Horn, co-chairman and chief creative officer, The Walt Disney Studios: “A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights. Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience. The talented filmmakers behind these worlds have much more in store, and we look forward to the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Pandora.”
More Marvel:
- In celebration of the Avengers: Endgame home release, Marvel has kicked off its We Love You 3000 tour which will visit several cities nationwide before culminating at D23 Expo 2019.
- And of course we have a slightly better idea of what’s ahead for the MCU as several Phase 4 films and Disney+ shows were revealed this weekend.
