Disney Announces Upcoming Video and DVD Releases
Tarzan
The Walt Disney Company has announced some of their home video and DVD release dates for
they year 2000. First up is what promised to be one of the biggest video events of the
year 2000, Disney's
Tarzan. The $170 million box-office smash will premier on video and DVD on February
1, 2000. The video will retail at $26.99, the DVD at $39.99. Both video and
DVD will feature an all-new Strangers Like Me music video by Phil Collins and a
strikingly beautiful digital transfer that showcases the film's breakthrough 3-D animation
technology known as "deep canvas".
The "family-friendly" DVD arrives DVD-ROM-enabled
(with Internet links) and loaded with exciting extras for all the family, including a
never-before-seen recording session by Phil Collins and guests, a Read-Along, a Trivia
Game, various sneak peeks and many other features. In addition to the standard DVD, a Tarzan
Collector's Edition DVD will premiere on March 21 adding audio commentary by the
movie's creators and extensive bonus materials about the history and development of the
film. Tarzan Collector's Edition DVD will retail for $49.99.
The release of Tarzan will be supported by a massive marketing program including
TV advertising during the Superbowl pre-show, the Golden Globes and the American Music
Awards as well as a raft of those promotional and synergy tie-ins that Disney is famous
for.
Goofy, Gadgets and Pooh
Retailers also will be looking forward to Disney's An Extremely Goofy Movie,
premiering exclusively on home video and DVD on the Goofiest Day of the Year -- "Leap
Day," Feb. 29, 2000. The movie will be available on video for $24.99
or DVD for $29.99. In this direct-to-video release Goofy and his son Max find themselves
attending college together in an all-new, hip and hilarious adventure that features
exciting extreme sports action, high-energy music and the star vocal power of comedian
Pauly Shore.
Debuting January 11, 2000 will be an all-new, hilarious, animated feature
Gadget's Greatest Gadgets. Coming to stores on the heels of the release of
Matthew Broderick's Inspector Gadget, debuting on December 7, 1999, this film
should capitalize on the nostalgia for the wacky 1980s TV show. Gadget's
Greatest Gadgets will retail for $19.99.
"We are very excited to be releasing Tarzan and An Extremely Goofy Movie on both video and DVD," said Mitch Koch, general manager, North America, Buena Vista Home Entertainment. "In particular, we are very proud of the DVDs' 'family-friendly' features -- like the Read-Along, the Trivia Game and the DVD-ROM features. They go a long way to showcasing the real capabilities of Disney DVD." "This reflects our commitment to retailers and consumers in bringing the top-quality family entertainment that people have come to expect. We will be heavily supporting these titles with significant levels of advertising across all media, as well as through our particularly strong tie-in promotions."
For younger Disney fans, destined to be seasonal classics are two, all-new Winnie the Pooh titles for Valentine's Day and Easter -- Winnie the Pooh, a Valentine for You!, also debuting on January 11, 2000, and Sing a Song With Tigger, which releases on March 7, 2000. Both are priced at $14.99. Sing a Song With Tigger is timed to follow the February national theatrical release of The Tigger Movie.
