Disney Nuptials

As a little girl my parents used to put the Cinderella soundtrack on for nap time. I would usually fall asleep before the record had to be turned over. As I grew up and began to play with Barbie dolls I'd play that same record as her wedding march. So when Doobie and I began to plan our wedding the first thing he learned was that I didn't want the traditional wedding march. Instead I wanted the same song I used for my Barbies, the Reception At the Palace. It is the trumpet fanfare and music that accompanied the princesses entrance to the Palace for the Royal Ball.

Doobie and I wanted a Disney undertone to our wedding, so the groomsmen and bridesmaids marched in to various Disney soundtracks - not the pop tunes or the grand musical numbers, but the short musical interludes that may contain a hint of the movie's main melody. Cruising the net I found websites like http://www.yourfairytale.com where couples planning a Disney wedding exchange lots ideas. We used their suggestion to place the rings in a glass slipper on top of the traditional pillow. It is reminiscent of the Grand Duke carrying the slipper throughout the Kingdom in search of its owner. My sister decorated the reception tables. Each one had a different movie theme which was reflected through Disney mugs and mini beans.

We've been to several other weddings that included Disney elements. Adrienne and Tony were married at the Disneyland Hotel. Their recessional was the Heigh Ho Mozart rendition of the Baroque Hoedown (Main Street Electrical Parade Theme). Andrew and Jennifer's recessional was There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow. At the reception wedding guests enjoyed seeking out the hidden Mickey that had been placed on their cake amongst the beautiful frosting leaves. The couple entered to the refrains of Fantasmic! and their first dance was a big band style performance of the Tiki Room chant.

Last weekend was the wedding of Jeff and Ilene. Their wedding recessional was It's a Small World which apparently has sentimental value for the couple and for Jeff's parents, they rode that magical attraction at the New York World's Fair. At the reception we learned that their love for Disney is in the genes. Both fathers gave very beautiful toasts with a touch of pixie dust. Ilene's father referred to her as his princess Cinderella and said he was so happy that she had found her Prince Charming while Jeff's father commenting on the fact that Jeff and Ilene met at Disneyland. He called it a miracle that Walt would be happy to be the father of. The happy couple's first dance was the Cinderella waltz So This Is Love and they seemed as unaware of those around them and as in love as Cinderella and her Prince do in that wonderful sequence.

Some of these weddings occurred on Disney property and some didn't. Some had all Disney music, others had few Disney tunes. So you don't have to get married at Disneyland or rent Cinderella's Crystal Coach to have a magical Disney wedding. Simply choose your favorite melodies or use Disney characters in your decorations. It can be as subtle or as obvious as you like.

Here's to your magical Disney wedding! May you live happily ever after!
