Bernard and Bianca hide in the pocket of Pennys dress and the three of them are lowered into the cave. There is a very dark pit in the cave where water comes in. Penny has not looked for the diamond over there. Bernard and Bianca make their way past the pit. Bernard notices a reflection and asks Penny to raise her lantern. The diamond reflects the light with an almost blinding brilliance. It is wedged inside an old pirate skeleton head on the other side of dark pit. Bernard and Bianca attempt to remove the diamond but are unable to. The water level is beginning to rise inside. After Penny makes her way past the pit the three of them working together are able to retrieve the diamond and are pulled to safety. Watching this sequence now Im reminded of the kind words and little gestures that help through the tougher days. Penny wasnt able to find the diamond without the mice and they werent able to get it out without Pennys help. It is a reminder to me that every little bit helps and if people pull together they can accomplish more. Sometimes when Im struggling with the website, either I have writers block or theres a minor issue trying to gather information or Im simply worn out Ill read some of the emails Ive received in response to previous columns. The kind words provide enough energy to get me past the hump and get the column completed. (by the way, thank you so much for that !)
After the trio are pulled up, Medusa clutches the diamond barely letting her sidekick take a peek. They argue over sharing the diamond all the way back to the riverboat. Once back on the riverboat Penny and the mice are joined by a group of swamp folks (rabbit, muskrats, turtle, etc) to take on the villains. I wont share all the details but will say "hooray for the little guys!" Penny and her teddy (with a surprise now hidden inside) are safely returned to New York City. The films final sequences include the realization of Pennys dream for adoption and hope for another child in distress as Bernard and Bianca are sent another mission.
I guess you could say I save this film for the "rainy" days. It is my version of a rainbow. You cant have a rainbow without rain. Something beautiful that grows out of something difficult or sad. It has always had a special place in my heart. Its music has helped me through the difficult days and reminds me that
Tomorrow is Another Day.
