The Toon Talk Top 10 of 2002

#9 - The Complete Goofy
Walt Disney Treasures DVD
Every hi-yuk!, gorsh! and wa-hoo-hoo-eee! ever uttered by our favorite dim-bulb Dippy Dawg throughout his solo cartoon series is here, where you can see his evolution from simple hick to sports enthusiast to suburban family man. Along with retrospectives on the men behind the Goof (Pinto Colvig and Bill Farmer) and a treatise on his essentials, Treasures man Leonard Maltin delivered yet another set that is far from goofy.
#10 - Atlantis: The Lost Empire Collectors
Edition DVD,
The Hunchback of Notre Dame DVD and
Beauty and the Beast Platinum Edition DVD
Highlighted by spirited and funny audio commentaries from producer Don Han and co-directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, these three DVDs represent three levels of Disney animated films: the cult favorite (Atlantis), the misunderstood masterpiece (Hunchback) and the certified classic (Beauty). And while one provided much needed backstory, and another offered only the tip of the iceberg in regards to proposed supplementals, the one that could (should) have been the best and brightest of the year nevertheless stumbled under the weight of too many kiddie features.
Honorable Mention:
Disney music fans were treated this year to five rare and/or new to CD soundtracks from the studio archives: Petes Dragon, The Rescuers Down Under, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and, most delightful of all, The Happiest Millionaire. Most of the credit for the existence of these Toon Talk Jukebox gems goes to ace digital restoration producer Randy Thornton.
Special Thanks:
The following actors, singers, producers, directors, writers, animators and artists all provided their own fair share of entertaining, original Disney moments in the past year:
Tim Allen, Ken Annakin, Christian Bale, Spencer Breslin, Jeff Bridges, Corey Burton, Tia Carrere, Daveigh Chase, James Coburn, Billy Crystal, Matt Damon ( ... just kidding), Dean DeBlois, Diane Disney Miller, Nicholas Samuel Doctor, Susan Egan, Bill Farmer, John Goodman, Leo Maxwell Gould, Don Hahn, Mark Keali'l Ho'omalu, James Newton Howard, Agnus T. Jones, James Earl Jones, the Kamehameha School's Children's Chorus, Glen Keane, Ward Kimball, Tommy Kirk, Michael Lembeck, James MacArthur, Kevin "Tricky Fish" MacDonald, Tess MacNeille, Leonard Maltin, Rob Marshall, Walter E. D. Miller, Hayley Mills, Elizabeth Mitchell, Hayao Miyazaki, Kenny Ortega, Suzanne Pleshette, Dennis Quaid, John C. A Very Special Dedication:
I dedicate this edition of Toon Talk to my father, Kenneth C. Holt, who passed away in October of this year. Thanks dad for taking me to all those Disney films as a kid, for inspiring me in my writing as an adult, and especially for all those trips to Disneyland. Youll be in my heart, for now and forever more.
