The Grand Opening in April 1992 was a phenomenal media circus and the co-ordination was first class. I believe it is still is the largest organized media event ever held. I suspect that the March event will be equally superb, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. Television spots have already debuted in 18 European countries, using both a teaser trailer and a modified version of the Disneys California Adventure T.V. ads where the characters peer over a fence to see who the new neighbours are. Both are increasing awareness of the new park and the media frenzy that will ensue in March will ensure that the target audience is reached in the six key demographic countries, namely France, the U.K., Germany, the Benelux countries, Italy and Spain. The synergy will be felt across all of Disneys European television interests from the various Disney Channels (four alone in the U.K.) to GM:TV in the U.K. and Super RTL in Germany. Add into the mix, the press and news footage and the internet, and the event will truly be a global affair.
Also, the new Walt Disney Studios park website that is now up and running (accessed from http:www.disneylandparis.com) will be hosting a live webcast from the Grand Opening party in the Studios to be held on the Friday night. This will ensure even a larger global audience with the event kicking off at approximately 10am on the Friday in California and 1pm on the eastern seaboard.
I am very excited about the prospect of another park opening. This is my third in a little over a year and I look forward to sharing the new park with Laughingplace readers! The first official preview is for shareholders on February 23 and I hope to be able to report back the following week. Stay tuned!
