Clearly, this collection was the focus of the Fun Book. Inside, pages were devoted to coloring pages and games. small world took the lion’s share with three pages. The Moon Flight game occupied two, and other children’s products (including the “Peanuts? gang) were relegated to one apiece.

The back cover of the Fun Book included an illustration depicting the complete original collection. Those who are familiar only with the “dolls? may be surprised to see the variety of other items that were produced. In addition to the 5? high bottles, which contained shampoo, cologne, and bubble bath, there were Love Cakes Soaps, Lipkins Lip Pomade, Fragrance DemiStik, a Fragrance Pin Pal, and the Love Dove Cream Sachet.

The initial set of four bottles were soon joined by others. Most of the bottles included accessories, such as collars, hats, or bows. These accessories are particularly difficult to find today, as they were removable. Each bottle was presented in a box decorated in the style of the times.

Many of the dolls had names, like “Gigi,? “Heidi? or “British Miss.? The cowgirl Cream Lotion, in tan, for example, was “Wendy.? Most of the bottles were plastic, although a few (like the Cologne Mist “Heidi? in purple) were glass. Details were either printed on, or molded into the plastic. In case you were wondering, the heads lifted off.

Today, a lot of big girls still collect the small world dolls from Avon. They turn up fairly frequently on ebay. Two other on line sources to check out are icollectavon.com and discontinuedavon.com. Just don’t blame me if you get hooked on trying to assemble a complete collection. If I can resist, so can you.
