When students come into my classroom they are surrounded by Mickey and Minnie, Disneyland, and other Disney characters. Under the Mickey, Minnie, and Disneyland posters I hang students' drawings. (Creating an effect like a giant refrigerator, according to a former student. :o) I have students draw to fix historical events, time periods, and people in their minds. I put their pictures up because that is what their parents did when they were children. (usually on the refrigerator ;o) Drawing is the way I get students excited about history since most of them haven't drawn since they were children. By high school its not cool to draw unless you have artistic talent. Since I don't grade on artistic ability, (it's all about color, good presentation, and creativity) and since my room is decorated with things they liked in elementary school, (when it was cool to draw just because it was fun) all of my students draw. Thus they learn while having fun, just like when they were children.
It does kind of look like a giant refrigerator :o)
