Equally impressive is the remaining bonus features of the set, comprised of both new and archival material:

  • In Mickey’s Cartoon Comeback, Maltin takes us into ‘the Morgue’, that is, the Disney Feature Animation Research Library, and interviews two contemporary Disney animators who have taken their turns at the mouse: Mark Henn (who, in his first assignment, animated Mickey in Mickey’s Christmas Carol) and Andreas Deja (who animated him in the features Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Fantasia 2000 as well as in The Prince and the Pauper).
  • Maltin interviews the current voices of Mickey and Minnie, real-life married couple Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor, in The Voice Behind the Mouse. Allwine, who has voiced Mickey for twenty-five years and counting, recounts how he came to be cast in the role of a lifetime, and examines the works of his predecessors, Walt Disney and Jimmy MacDonald. Both of these interviews are in-depth and fascinatingly enlightening.
  • Mouse Mania, commissioned by the studio to celebrate Mickey’s 50th anniversary for a primetime television special, is an amazing stop-motion short created by Mike Jittlov that will cause a rush of loving memories for any who grew up in the Disney 70s. With its Baroque Hoedown score and parade of Disneyland toys and tchotchkes, you’ll want to watch this one more than once.
  • Two excerpts from the Disneyland television series episodes The Plausible Impossible and Tricks of Our Trade show Mickey helping Walt describe different concepts used in animation. These are brief and not really necessary here, as both full episodes can be seen on another Walt Disney Treasure set, Behind the Scenes at the Walt Disney Studio.
  • Another repeat is Mickey Meets the Maestro, a short segment on how they filmed Mickey ‘meeting’ conductor James Levine on the set of Fantasia 2000, which was previously included in the Fantasia Anthology DVD set. But having it here makes sense, as it was the only real way to include F2K in the chronology.
  • Walt often filmed his television series in color, even though they were then broadcast in black and white. Such foresight brings us another rare find with the Color Titles from The Mickey Mouse Club. These were the last time Walt personally voiced Mickey. (Sharp-eared Disney music fans will recognize some familiar tunes during these as well.)
  • Jiminy Cricket hosts The Making of ‘Mickey’s Christmas Carol’, a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this Oscar-nominated short, including interviews with director Burny Mattinson, animators Mark Henn (Mickey, Jiminy), David Block (Scrooge McDuck, Donald) and Glen Keane (Goofy, Willie the Giant), and voice actors Wayne Allwine (Mickey), Alan Young (Scrooge), Hal Smith (Goofy), Will Ryan (Willie) and Clarence “Ducky? Nash, in his final performance as his irascible alter ego Donald Duck.
  • Rounding out the set are two galleries, with some entries featuring commentary from Maltin: Publicity and Memorabilia (posters and magazine art) and Story and Background Art (from The Little Whirlwind, The Nifty Nineties, The Pointer and Symphony Hour).

No doubt about it: with each consecutive ‘wave’, the Walt Disney Treasures sets just keep getting better and better.
