Toon Talk: Bambi Platinum Edition DVD
In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I’ll briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject. OK, this one isn’t much of a stretch … after all, how many deer movies are there? Based on the acclaimed Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings novel of the same name, The Yearling (1946, Warner Home Video) is, like Bambi, much more then a movie about a deer. Sensitive, stirring and timeless, this Clarence Brown-directed drama is actually more akin to Disney’s Old Yeller in several respects, dealing with love and loss in the wilderness. Nominated for seven Academy Awards (including nominations for Best Picture and its two leads, Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman), the film won two (Color Cinematography, Color Interior Decoration), plus a special award for newcomer Claude Jarman, Jr. as the young Jody Baxter. Jarman would later star in Disney’s The Great Locomotive Chase. |
