Richard Sherman shows Julie Andrews' letter
Before ending the discussion, Richard Sherman read a letter from Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews, giving her regrets for not being able to attend and expressing her pleasure about the film and the event.
Next Mary Poppins came onstage, the curtain went down ...
... and Mary explained everything.
Before each song a musical note would appear on the screen as our cue to prepare to sing. During the songs the words would appear. She also explained that sometimes other things would appear like "snap your fingers." She then had us all practice finger snapping.
Mary then exited the stage and the movie began. As each name was shown in the opening credits a huge ovation could be heard with the biggest ovation being reserved for the Sherman Brothers. Then as each actor appeared on screen for the first time the crowd cheered. It was a fantastic experience to hear the audience cheer Mr. Banks when he declares "Supercalifragilisticexpialodocious" after he is sacked at the bank, sing along with classic Sherman Brothers tunes, clap along with the longer musical sequences, and hear voices reciting other lines of dialog from various spots in the film. The best sing-along sequence, in my opinion, was during I Love To Laugh where the audience attempted the different types of laughs with Mary and Bert and laughed right along with the corny jokes.
All-in-all it was a wonderful evening and I highly recommend it for all Mary Poppins fans.
