Nevertheless, the real treats are on disc two, beginning with Considine and Stollery’s Return to the Triple R. The two grown actors reminisce about their happy days filming the shows at the Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall, California, and comment on the lasting impact of the show over the past fifty years. Leonard Maltin returns to interview the surviving adult cast member in Back in the Saddle with Harry Carey, Jr. Carey recalls that he originally auditioned for the Ollie character and how the campfire scenes were actually shot during the hot days of those summers long gone.

Rabble-Rousing Rebel Also inspired by the legend of the “Swamp Fox�?, The Patriot (2000, Columbia) stars Mel Gibson as the fictional Benjamin Martin, a peaceful colonial farmer who joins the militia during the American Revolution to exact his revenge on those responsible for his son’s death. With Oscar-nominated cinematography (Caleb Deschanel) and musical score (John Williams), the film often recalls Gibson’s Braveheart, but is still an exciting historical adventure in its own right. Also starring Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson, Chris Cooper, Tom Wilkinson and, in a breakout performance, Jason Isaacs. Directed by Roland Emmerich. DVD available from Columbia/Tri-Star Home Video. |
