Ken Reviews: Jeff Lange 40th Anniversary DVDs

The Disneyland's Birthday Photo Slide Show doesn't live up to the slideshow on the "Anniversary" DVD, but how could it without being redundant?
These DVDs compliment each other very well. If you have to choose one, the Anniversary DVD is the one to get if you are a big fan of the live entertainment at Disney theme parks or if you really want video and stills from the Indiana Jones Adventure. If you want a record of that historical event that brought the likes of Roy E. Disney, John Hench, and Dick Nunis together in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle to bury a time capsule, or a special version of "Fantasy in the Sky", the Birthday DVD is the one for you.
There is something about these fan-made DVDs that is special and authentic, but fans only have access to so much. Perhaps Disney can contract with some of these dedicated people in a win-win situation that doesn't create more overhead for Disney. Give them material they couldn't get on their own - including "making of", interviews, and maybe even stock character animation to be inserted for transitions – and give them some editorial freedom – and you'll have something that will delight the fans even more and promote a nostalgia about your parks to new generations, which will be to Disney's benefit.
I can't wait to see how Lange will be presenting Disneyland Park's 50th Anniversary ten or fifteen years from now. I'll probably be noting that the picture is only 2-D and resolution isn't high enough to cover the whole wall without losing quality. I kid, of course, because I'm sure that DVD will be out any day (if it isn't already). Being the sentimental guy that I am, I'm happy that there are these DVDs that capture a special event or a particular time in Disneyland history, while I can walk around the place without having to capture everything mechanically…only with my senses.
