So, while you may visit Terabithia to see the scenery, it is its grounded inhabitants who you will most remember upon leaving.
Toon Talk Rating: B+
In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I will briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject. Fantastical Flights of Fancy A young boy finds escape in the pages of The Never-Ending Story (Warner 1984), acclaimed director Wolfgang Petersen’s beloved fantasy that takes viewers on a magical journey into the mythical land of Fantasia. Barret Oliver and Noah Hathaway (of the original Battlestar Galactica) star as the heroes of the story on both sides of the book. The film also features a memorable score by Oscar-winner Giorgio Moroder, including the catchy pop title tune sung by Limahl. Two sequels and two television series followed the film, available on DVD from Warner Home Video. |
Coming Soon:
- Return to Never Land once more with the Platinum Edition release of Peter Pan (March 6).
- Meet the Robinsons in … Meet the Robinsons, Disney’s latest computer animated fantasy comedy (March 30).
- High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu goes Double Dutch in the Disney Channel hit Jump In!, on Disney DVD April 3.
TOON TALK AWARDS WATCH Congratulations to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, winner of the British Academy of Film & Television Arts Award for Special Visual Effects. But that isn’t the end of Pirates’ booty - the film swept the Visual Effects Society Awards, winning a total of six trophies. Other Disney VES winners include Roving Mars (Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project) and Cars, winner for Animated Character in an Animated Feature for that scene-stealing tow truck, Mater. Cars also won Randy Newman the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Media for his “Our Town?. At the Annie Awards, Cars won the big one, Best Animated Feature, but only one other award, to Newman again for Music in an Animated Feature. Bambi II deservedly took the prize for Best Home Entertainment Production, while Eartha Kitt won her second Annie for Voice Acting for her role as the villainous Yzma in the television series The Emperor’s New School, and longtime Disney animator Andreas Deja received the prestigious Windsor McKay Award for his “career contributions to the art of animation?. And finally, the American Film Institute, in honor of the tenth anniversary of their “100 Years, 100 Movies? celebrations, will revisit their first list with “AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies: 10th Anniversary Edition?. Of the 400 movies nominated, Disney and its affiliates were represented with 19:
Snow White, Fantasia and Pulp Fiction made the final 100 back in 1998. The new list will be revealed this June during a three-hour television special on CBS. Watch this space for updates. |
