So Comic-Con kicked off with Preview Night this evening. It is the evening before the con officially kicks off and attendees are able to go on the convention floor for three hours. While everyone’s Comic-Con plan of attack is different, I use Preview Night as a way to see the floor without having to worry about getting in to any panels as those don’t start until Thursday.
So here is my rundown of Disney’s presence at Comic-Con. While not exhaustive, it is a slice of what I was able to experience.
Marvel:
The Marvel booth features a lot of video screens this year, which gave it a very dynamic feel. There were two Asgardians guarding Mjolnir promting this fall’s Thor: The Dark World. For the first time since I have attended, Marvel sold merchandise. I was able to score this Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. t-shirt.
ABC:
ABC brought a pirate ship to San Diego that was on a course to Neverland. There were look-a-likes of Captain Hook, the Evil Queen, Prince Charming, Snow White, and Emma. When you got into the ship, they invited you to watch a promo for the third season of Once Upon a Time and then handed you keys to unlock a heart box that contained one of four pins. I received a pin of Rumpelstiltskin’s dagger. The first 10 attendees that collect all four pins, will receive a priority pass to the Once Upon a Time panel on Saturday. I found it odd that there was no mention of the upcoming Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, but it was an impressive exhibit for a show going into its third season when usually ABC is promoting a new series. This allowed fans to experience something for a show they already have a connection with.
Lucasfilm:
Lucasfilm’s pavilion was focused on the various companies that license the Star Wars characters. There was a store for Ashley Eckstein’s Her Universe inside the pavilion, but sadly no sign of David. One thing I stumbled upon was Petco’s new Star Wars Pet Fans collection. To support this launch, Petco is inviting both 2-legged and four –legged fans to their Star Wars Yappy Hour on Friday at Hotel Indigo from 4-7pm. There will be a Star Wars Photo Experience for people and pets, movie caricatures drawn of both of you, complimentary treats & giveaways, and a chance to win items from Petco’s Star Wars Pet fans collection.
Disney Publishing Worldwide:
DPW had a variety of books available for purchase from nearly every Disney-owned franchise. They were also giving away complimentary review copies of Neal Shusterman and Eric Elfman’s Tesla’s Attic as well as Conda Williams Chima’s The Enchanted Heir.
Capcom:
While not a Disney company, Capcom did have a playable demo of Ducktales: Remastered. They also had the money bin you can dive into that they had in LA during E3 last month. Capcom will be hosting a panel on their Ducktales game on Sunday.
That wraps up Preview Night. Tomorrow my plan is to attend some Marvel panel as well as check out the Disney Infinity preview set up in San Diego’s Gaslamp District.
