Disney Infinity 3.0 – Disney Figures Review

Disney Infinity 3.0 features six Disney figures available individually that work exclusively with the Toy Box (more will be added to the game over the next several months). If you’re curious to know what each figure does, I’ve broken down their abilities and other highlights in this review of each figure.

MickeyMickey Mouse

Mickey‘s long-range attack allows him to throw things, similar to Donald Duck from 2.0. His throwable items are a scrub brush, top hat and newspaper. Highlights of Mickey’s skill tree include the ability to call Pluto, Donald, Goofy and Oswald towns persons to fight with him, each needs to be unlocked individually. To add to the adorableness of this attack, he summons them with his bandleader baton. He says optimistic things like “I know I can do it!”

MinnieMinnie Mouse

Who would have thought that Minnie would be more powerful than Mickey? She throws her purse with a trail of pink sparkles for her long range attack, which packs quite a punch and comes back to you like Rapunzel’s frying pan. Her special attack, available in the skill tree, is called “Everybody Loves Minnie,” which makes enemies turn on each other and fight the battle for her. She has some truly adorable phrases, such as “Sorry, but you were being mean!”

MulanMulan

Mulan fights with her bo, lunging straight forward with it for her long-range attack and using it in close combat as well. Her special attack from the Skill Tree is “Fire Power,” the ability to shoot fireworks. She’s a bit more PG with phrases like “Let’s kick some butt!” I was a little disappointed with Mulan’s basic attacks, I expected more from the “Girl worth fighting for.” But her fireworks power is pretty cool and you can make it stronger with more skill tree upgrades. (Mulan is a Best Buy exclusive at launch, but will eventually be available at all retailers).

OlafOlaf

Everyone’s favorite snowman Olaf sneezes his carrot nose at enemies like a dart. For his close-up attack, he removes his right arm and slaps enemies with it using his left. He has the most peculiar special attack, called “Catchin’ Some Rays.” Olaf sits in a lounge chair looking cool while enemies burn up in the heat. He has adorable phrases like “Isn’t this just the best day?”

SamSam Flynn

Sam Flynn from Tron: Legacy can throw the power disc off his back for a long range attack. In short hand-to-hand combat, he clutches it in his fist to hit his enemies with. For a finishing move, he pounds it into the ground at their feet, causing the ground to shatter in blue pixels. For his special move, “Son of Flynn,” he raises his light disc over his head and a beam of light shines down, derezing nearby enemies. He says thing like “Yeah, I’m ready for anything. I’m a user.” It’s not unfair to say that a fight against Sam Flynn is not a fair fight. He’s awesome!

QuorraQuorra

Sam has met his match with Quorra, who is equally powerful if not more so. She uses a digital grappling hook to bring enemies closer to her for her long-range attack. In short range, she fights with a laser sword and makes quick work of large robots from The Incredibles. Her special attack is “Last of the ISOs, which increases her damage for a short time while her moves are surrounded by a bright white light. She says things like “This is better than a sunrise.”

Inside OutInside Out Figures

All of the Inside Out figures are fairly similar, none of which serve you well in battle. They each throw their color memory balls as their long-range attack and hand-to-hand combat is similar across the board as well, except for Disgust who uses her neckerchief as a whip. Their special attacks all have the same name (“Wave of Emotion”), but the outcome differs slightly. For Joy, it floods the surrounding area with waves of yellow sparkles that weaken enemies. Anger’s version sets the area ablaze with flames and causes damage. Sadness and Disgust both weaken and slow down their enemies (Sadness uses blue waves, Disgust’s look like green odorous gas). Fear’s panic bolts weaken his enemies. They all have great phrases.

Final Thoughts

Sam Flynn and Quorra are two of the best figures so far in the Disney Infinity universe based on strength and coolness factor. The only thing I wish they had done differently would be to make their bases transparent so the figures are lit from beneath during game play. Minnie Mouse is a must-have for any fans of the short and if you’re getting her, it feels wrong not to get Mickey. Olaf is better than I expected and Mulan is the least impressive of this first wave of Disney characters. The Inside Out characters are great in their play set and would be fine to build a Toy Box with, but don’t expect to knock out many enemies or impress your friends with them.
