Last night the MTV Movie Awards 2016, hosted by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, aired. Incidentally, Johnson will be starring in Disney’s next Princess movie, Moana, which will debut in November 2016 for the holiday season.
While the MTV Movie Awards aren’t the first award show you think of when it come to Disney winning awards, but they came out pretty decently in a few categories last night.
First, Amy Poehler won “Best Virtual Performance” for her role in Disney Pixar’s Inside Out beating out fellow Disney nominees Andy Serkis and Lupita Nyong’o who were up for their roles in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In her speech, Poehler pointed out that yesterday was the anniversary for Parks and Recreation, which she starred in along with Marvel-alum Chris Pratt who was also in attendance.
Despite the loss to Poehler in that category, Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out very strong through the award show as did Marvel’s (but not Disney’s) Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds.
Adam Driver won “Best Villain” for his role as Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens while Daisy Ridley, who also happened to be celebrating her birthday, won “Best Breakthrough Performance.” John Boyega was also nominated for this category as well as “Best Action Performance.”
Sadly, Star Wars couldn’t win everything as Ridley was also nominated for “Best Female Performance” but was beaten out by Charlize Theron for Mad Max: Fury Road. She was also nominated for “Best Hero.” The Force Awakens was nominated in “Best Fight” and “Best Ensemble Cast” as well but did not win.
Still, the most coveted award of the evening, “Movie of the Year”, was nabbed by The Force Awakens. The film beat out Avengers: Age of Ultron, Creed, Deadpool, Jurassic World and Straight Outta Compton for the honor. J.J. Abrams and Daisy Ridley accepted the award on behalf of the cast and everyone who worked on the film.
A big “congratulations” to all the big Disney winners!
