The latest Marvel Collector Corps box just arrived and this month it is themed to Super Hero Showdowns. While the theme may be nebulus since comic books are all about Super Hero Showdowns, the loose theme allowed the curators at Funko to put together a fun hodge-podge of items.
The Patch:
Every Collector Corps package comes with a patch and this time we see Iron Man in a “showdown” with Ultron. This is the first time they ever included two characters in one patch. For the record, the first showdown between these classic Marvel characters was in West Coast Avengers #65 in 1990.
The Pin:
This month’s pin is a split-face showdown between Hulk and Red Hulk. Funko points out that this is the first time they showcased two characters in one pin, but since they share a face I am not sure that it counts. Red Hulk first appeared in Hulk #23 in 2010.
The Comic:
This month’s comic is December’s Inhumans vs. X-Men #1. The exclusive cover showcases a showdown between Wolverine and Sabretooth in the first ever Pop! Photography cover. The plot of the comic is that with the Inhumans’ power-granting Terrigen mists threatening the lives of every mutant on the planet, the X-Men have no choice but to declare war. It is the first issue of a six-issue limited series.
Bullseye/Daredevil Two-Pack
This two-pack of vinyl figures is a showdown between a classic hero and his most iconic rival. They went with a less-known look for Daredevil which makes the Pop! stand out. The action poses of both characters makes this a fun set to display.
Spidey vs. Goblin T-Shirt
The apparel item this month is a t-shirt showcasing a showdown between Spider-Man and Green Goblin. According to Funko, this pair was picked for the shirt after a Twitter poll showed that the two characters were two of their followers favorite rivals. The shirt has a retro look and has more energy than past shirts.
Pint Size Heroes Captain America & Red Skull
These mini-sized figures are the first Pint Size Heroes to come in a Marvel Collector Corps Box. They came in bags, but the figures inside were not surprises as each subscriber got both Captain America and the Red Skull. As Marvel’s first pair of rivals, they make sense to be in this box.
Conclusion
While I prefer it when the boxes have a more cohesive theme, the contents of the box made up for the bland topic. The shirt is one of the best they have done and both the Pint Size Hero and Pop! Two-Pack were well crafted.
April’s Marvel Collector Corps box will be themed to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Obviously.
