As part of their Earth Month Celebration, Disneyland Resort Cast Members participated in an art challenge. The top 8 pieces were on display at Disneyland’s Opera House. Each piece was created from recycled commodities collected from the Disneyland Resort. Each team applied their creativity and innovation to create the following art. Included below are the finalists as well as each piece’s conservation statement.
En-CAN-ted Rose
Team Name: Just Beauties, No Beasts
Made By: Food and Beverage, Disneyland / Paradise Pier Hotels
Conservation Statement: The Food and Beverage departments at both Disneyland and Paradise Pier Hotel continue to conserve water through providing our guests with water only upon request. WE have eliminated small water bottles from our concierge’s service and are only providing our concierge guests with two large bottles of water for their entire stay to reduce plastic and water waste. We continue to work with our maintenance department to replace or fix leaky faucets and are dedicated to reducing energy waste though automatic light sensors in all of our offices and locker rooms. Effers are made to turn off televisions, audio equipment, and lights in locations that aren’t in operation or open for business.
Dreamers of Tomorrow
Team Name: Repurposed Dreamers
Made By: Scenic Fabrication & Art Services
Conservation Statement: This montaged diorama has many influences that are found in this composition. It was inspired by Disney’s Tomorrowland, my love of science, the STEM programs offered in our educational system, and the recent installation of a “Zero Waste” recycling program we have adopted here at our facility. The mantra: Dream it, conceive it, believe it, and achieve it, provides motivation within my life. This wonderful company was founded on the dreams of one individual. Walt Disney’s dream continues to inspire thousands all over the world, where dreams do become a reality.
AT-GCAT (All Terrain Gift Card Armored Transport)
Team Name: WOD Squard
Made By: World of Disney. Downtown Disney District
Conservation Message: Environmentality is important. Doing little things can go a long way and influencing others to do the same would have a greater impact as a whole. I take this thought through the quote from the Emperor in Mulan, “A single grain of rice can tip the scale. One man may be the difference to victory and defeat.” Once upon a time we never had a gift card recycling bin and when it started not many Cast Members knew it was there or was not use to putting it in there. As time grew and training others to place the gift card in the recycling bin, people are more aware to place it in there and now we have tons of gift cards waiting to be recycled. Near our water dispenser we use paper cups and right next to it is a recycle bin just for those cups. We encourage Cast Members (through training) to bring their own water bottles to place in an area next to the water dispenser, that way we do not use as many paper cups when we need to hydrate. It all started with someone that had environmentality, started the project and now we all recycle at work on those items as an afterthought because that person got the ball rolling.
R.E.U.S.E. – Rejected Elements Utilized Somewhere Else
Team Name: ODC Recyclers
Made By: Ontario Distribution Center
Conservation Statement: Over the years the Ontario DC Cast Members have worked diligently to recycle, repair, reduce or reuse our consumable materials. Partnering with a pallet company we rebuild as many of our old pallets as possible and they recycle any remaining parts. We also have a process with the city for recycling our paper and plastic items to reduce our footprint significantly. Cast maintenance of our programs has proven to be very effective, allowing us to be recognized a number of times for our recycling programs by the city’s preferred recycling vendor. In addition, we consistently look for ways to reduce consumption of electricity and have upgraded and replaced the fixtures throughout the facility with more energy efficient units. Our project incorporates a number of the items we manage each day to recycle, reuse or repair. We made the table, vases, storage box and flowers on site.
The Grand Horse
Team Name: Grand Califragilisticexpialidcoious
Made By: Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa Housekeeping
Conservation Statement: To create the horse we reused items that were take no longer needed in Guest rooms that are being reimagined and renovated. Some of these items include old furniture, fabrics, wood, metal, plastic and soap. The head of the horse was created with recycle soap, metal chain and plastic from our recycle.
Junkle Cruise
Team Name: Animation Anarchy
Made By: FOS Manufacturing Animation
Conservation Statement: Environmentality is an important part of work the Animation Team does to keep over two thousand animated figures and props working and looking great. We use such a wide variety of materials and paints that our shop would be a major generator of waste if we didn’t have such good practices in place such as recycling, renewing and reducing consumption. We continuously rebuild animated figure mechanisms and bodies to bring back life to old figures which keeps things like steel and plastic out of the waste steam. Our paint mixing and cleaning procedures save water and our use of portable LED lighting reduces the electricity we use to illuminate the figures when we are repairing or painting them in the attractions. Our passion for Environmentality is easy to see when you visit our shop or when you see the enthusiasm we have for the Environmentality Art Challenges.
It’s a Recyclable World After All
Team Name: Plaza Inn-Vironmentality
Made By: Plaza Inn, Disneyland Park
Conservation Statement: Over the last year, Plaza Inn has made multiple steps towards improving our efforts to be more conscious of the impact we are making environmentally. One of these steps we have made can be found in our back of house areas. We have provided more trash cans and have clearly labeled each of them with what type of trash should be disposed in them. Along with providing these trash cans, we have also educated our Cast on what they are and why they are important. Making recycling more accessible to our Cast means that the task of recycling is easier and therefore increasing the fullness of our recycling bins.
The Little Mermaid
Team Name: Whosits and Whatsits
Made By: Cast Costuming
Conservation Statement: Here at Cast Costuming we care about what we put into our environment. In our break rooms we place our recycling into our mixed recycling bins. We also recycle the plastic raincoats that Cast Members have returned. To conserve energy, we turn our computers off at closing and combine dryer loads. We conserve water by only doing laundry loads when we have enough to fill a washer. Most of our water goes straight to the ocean after use, so we like to keep our Flounders and Nemos safe by making sure that toxic chemicals do not go down our drains. We try to reuse costumes for as long as possible to reduce waste by repairing them. However when our costumes are no longer show quality, they are sent out to Goodwill. From there, they are either sold by Goodwill or sent to third world countries.
Congratulations to all the entrants. Here is a look at last year’s winner from Golden Vine Winery at Disney California Adventure.
