ESPN+ is loaded with fun and entertaining content for sports fans to enjoy. It also offers Detail from Kobe Bryant. This educational series takes an in-depth look at various athletes (in Bryant’s case, basketball players) and informs viewers what they could have done differently in the heat of the moment.
Make no mistake about it, this series is not meant to entertain. In fact, it even comes with a disclaimer at the start of the episode that reads: “This series is not meant for debate. This series is not meant to entertain.” This series is simply an instructional tool, and the most recent episode takes a look at WNBA star Courtney Williams.
Now, as someone who grew up playing basketball, I certainly see the value in getting advice from a legendary NBA star like Kobe Bryant and find it mildly interesting to watch as he breaks down a player’s game. However, as I can’t really do much with this advice at this stage of my life, I feel as though this series has a very small demographic – people who are currently playing competitive basketball.
In fact, this specific episode is even more targeted than that. It’s really just a series of clips from a WNBA finals game, showing a number of mistakes Williams made in that game with voiceover from Bryant explaining what she could have done better. So if you play a different position from her or your skill set is just very different, much of the advice from Bryant might not pertain to you. Really, the person this episode works best for is Courtney Williams.
As I said though, there is a small amount of entertainment to be found in Detail. If you’re a fan of sports, It’s always fun to watch someone who is truly a mast of their game. In this case, we’re not really watching Bryant, but we at least get to see that he complete understand every facet of the game as he talks us through even the most minor details that most fans would never notice when watching a game.
With all of that being said, there’s really not much to Detail for casual sports fans to enjoy. If you’re a basketball player who wants to learn more about the game or a coach who wants tips on how to help your point guard better their game, I would recommend this particular episode to you. If you’re a diehard basketball fan who loves Kobe Bryant and desperately wishes you could watch him play again, you also might enjoy this. Otherwise, there’s not much of a reason to watch this episode.
Detail is available now on ESPN+. Fans can subscribe to ESPN+ for just $4.99 a month (or $49.99 per year) and can cancel at any time.
