Details on another of Marvel’s upcoming Godzilla one-shots has been revealed, with the official announcement for Godzilla vs. X-Men #1.
What’s Happening:
- Thanks to a new partnership between Godzilla owner Toho and Marvel, Godzilla vs. X-Men is the fourth of six different one-shots pitting the King of Monsters against Marvel superheroes, each set in different time periods connecting to the history of both properties. Announced already were one-shots featuring Godzilla facing the Fantastic Four (the 1960s), the Hulk (the 1970s) and Spider-Man (the 1980s).
- Godzilla vs. X-Men is set in the 1990s, featuring a team of X-Men in era-appropriate costumes that will be very familiar both to comic book fans and to those who watched the 1990s X-Men animated series and the current X-Men ‘97 follow-up, including Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Storm, Beast and Gambit.

- Writing the comic is Fabian Nicieza, a key part of the X-Men universe creative team in the 1990s as a writer on X-Men, X-Force and other mutant titles, which included co-creating Deadpool in the pages of New Mutants with Rob Liefeld. Emilio Laiso (X-Men Unlimited, The Spectacular Spider-Man) is the artist on the one-shot.

- Per the press release, “When a robotics firm draws a kaiju’s anger, the X-Men are called in to protect a world that hates and fears them from the counterattack of…GODZILLA! But what are the reasons for Godzilla’s attacks? And are the X-Men on the right side? Follow the X-Men as they take on THE KING OF MONSTERS before humanity sends forth the Sentinels to finish the job!”
- Tony Daniel provides the cover art, with variant covers by Mike McKone, Taurin Clarke, and Nick Bradshaw.
- Godzilla vs. X-Men #1 is on sale May 14.

What They’re Saying:
- Fabian Nicieza: “If you'd asked ten-year-old Fabian what he'd do for the chance to write Godzilla, he would have breathed fire and burned anyone up for the job to an uncomfortable crisp. Combine Godzilla with a 'vs.' and an 'X-Men,' well, let's just say I love the smell of burning writer in the morning. It smells like victory!"
