Disney+ Updating Content Advisories as Disney Makes Changes to Its DEI Programs
Content advisories on some of Disney’s older titles now be presented in a simpler, yet more vague manner.
Disney+ will be changing its content disclaimers as The Walt Disney Company moves to update its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
What’s Happening:
- Pressure has been put on companies to change or completely get rid of their DEI programs since Donald Trump took office for the second time last month.
- Axios reports that Disney has made some updates to their DEI programs to focus more closely on business outcomes.
- The most obvious change to consumers will be the removal of the auto-play content advisory disclaimers that run before some older titles on Disney+, including Dumbo and Peter Pan, that warn viewers the film “includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of peoples or cultures."
- An advisory will reportedly still be featured under Details, but will be shortened to note that “this program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions."
- Previous versions of these disclaimers state, “These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe."
- Disney will also replace the "Diversity & Inclusion" performance factor that it used to evaluate executive compensation with a new "Talent Strategy."
- The new "Talent Strategy" factor includes concepts from its old "Diversity & Inclusion" factor, but is more focused on how values drive business success.
- Disney’s Reimagine Tomorrow initiative, which highlighted stories and talent from underrepresented communities, and its website will also be taken down.
- Lastly, the company has rebranded its "Business" Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) to "Belonging" Employee Resource Groups.
