Recap: Spidey Dons His New Suit to Face His Fears in Penultimate Episode of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”

As things begin to wrap up, a new threat emerges

Things have ramped up to this two-episode finale of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney+. We last saw Peter getting ready to get back into the action with a brand new, but very familiar suit. Now, things are coming to a head as the 110th Street Gang and the Scorpions are ready to finish things for good, leading to an inevitable second meeting between Spidey and Scorpion.

The episode opens with Octavius in a prison cell complaining about grammatical errors in the Sokovia Accords. An officer tells Octavius he has a visitor and he leads him to Norman. His old foe informs him he orchestrated his arrest and made a deal with Secretary Ross to study Octavius’ warehouse full of inventions. Octavius becomes enraged and is pulled away by officers as Norman taunts him.

Donovan, Bulldozer and Lonnie watch as Oscorp raids Octavius’ warehouse, which they received the location of from Chameleon. Donovan explains his plan to take out the two police officers watching the building and steal the tech. Lonnie protests, saying they shouldn’t be picking a fight with the police, but Donovan brushes him off. The Oscorp truck pulls away and Donovan and the rest of the 110 pursue.

Elsewhere, Nico and Pearl walk through the city together. They share a hug before going their separate ways and Nico puts in her headphones to listen to a voicemail from Peter. The 110s make their move on the Oscorp truck and a chase ensues. The truck gets run off the road and is heading directly for Nico, but Spider-Man swings in and stops it, revealing his classic suit.

The 110s arrive to loot the truck and Peter shares a moment with Nico before swinging her to safety. The gang starts to open up the truck but Spidey stops them and begins webbing them up until he notices Lonnie is with them. He tries to talk to him but they’re interrupted by Scorpion and his gang. The two gangs square off and finally rush at each other in the middle of the street.

Peter watches as Scorpion approaches and begins to panic, having flashbacks of the villain nearly killing him. He convinces himself he’s okay though and Scorpion leaps at Donovan instead. Scorpion pins Donovan to the ground and forces the gang leader to plead for his life. He decides to kill his longtime rival anyway but Spider-Man saves him at the last moment.

As Spidey and Scorpion fight, Lonnie looks to Donovan for leadership. Instead, Donovan decides to bail on his gang and runs. Lonnie heads for the truck to try and level the playing field but he is met instead by Carmilla. The two fight before a bulldozer tackles her, allowing Lonnie to run for the truck. Inside, Lonnie searches for helpful tech and knocks down some kind of vial that starts leaking gas. Lonnie chokes on the blue gas and falls to the floor. This would be the chemical that gives Tombstone his superhuman strength and nearly unbreakable skin. Another step toward Lonnie becoming the crime boss we know from the comics.

Spider-Man and Scorpion continue to fight until Spidey notices Lonnie fall out of the truck. He rushes to help him but Scorpion grabs him and lines him up for a kill shot. This time, it’s Lonnie who saves him. Scorpion hurls his spiked tail at Lonnie and it appears as though he has impaled him. Instead though, we see that Lonnie caught the tail and he breaks the tip off of it before landing a punch that drops Scorpion.

Lonnie and Spider-Man team up to fight Scorpion again and they eventually put him down. As Lonnie and Spidey talk though, Scorpion uses his tail to drop a bunch of debris on Lonnie. Peter becomes enraged as he hears Norman saying “you’re holding yourself back" in his head. Spidey attacks again with a new ferocity that almost pushes him beyond a line he never wanted to cross. He puts Scorpion down and threatens to impale him with his own tail but Lonnie works his way out of the debris just in time to stop him. Spidey instead webs him up and leave him for the police. I would expect this moment will come into play later in the series, when Lonnie is a full crime boss but Spider–Man has a soft spot for his old friend.

Spidey swings off to find Nico and Lonnie leaves with the 110. Nico and Peter find each other in an alley and they both apologize. Peter tells Nico they’ll have no more secrets between them. Nico clutches at her necklace and repeats the words “no more secret." This amulet she wears around her neck is the source of her witch-like abilities in the comics.

Peter and May watch The Bachelor before Peter leaves to take a call from Norman. Osborn runs through the inventory of everything they collected from Octavius’ warehouse and jokes about wanting 100 Spider-Men. Peter changes the subject to their talk of him pulling his punches and laments the fact that he almost went too far. Norman talks him down though and explains that Peter managed to control himself and that’s all that matters.

After they hang up, Norman meets with his team of scientists. They update him on the Octavius tech, the state of his testing gliders and Peter’s generator. He asks Wittman about his “other duties" though and the scientist informs him that, with Peter’s blood sample, they will soon be able to replicate Spider-Man’s DNA. Turns out Norman wasn’t joking about 100 Spider-Men. I think we all know this doesn’t end well for him though.

This penultimate episode felt like a finale in a lot of ways. Peter has corrected a lot of things in his personal life, Lonnie seems poised to take over the 110 and Scorpion and Octavius have been taken care of. However, it appears Norman’s nine-episode run of being trustworthy has come to an end. It’s looking like a new villain is on the horizon for Spider-Man.
