New “Avatar: Fire and Ash” Character Peylak is the Chief of the Wind Traders

David Thewlis plays the colorfully costumed character.

Another new character has been revealed from Avatar: Fire and Ash, in the form of Peylak, played by David Thewlis.

What’s Happening:

  • Empire first revealed the details on the new character, explaining Peylak is the chief of the Wind Traders, also known as the Tialim Clan. They are described as “a new group of Na’vi who traverse the lush moon on gigantic jellyfish-like creatures," a group who director James Cameron previously described as “nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages."
  • Rumors had previously said Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Wonder Woman’s Thewlis was playing one of the third Avatar film’s fearsome – and antagonistic - Ash Clan, but that was incorrect, with Peylak instead described as “a cool, colourful chieftan with one hell of a dress sense."
  • The film’s costume designer, Deborah L. Scott tells Empire that originally Peylak’s look was more subdued, explaining,  “The cloak was a little more rugged, a little more rustic. But as all the clans developed, Jim [Cameron] said, ‘I just don’t think it’s grand enough.’ So I went back and reinvented it."

  • Scott said, of Thewlis, “The way he carries himself, he’s got great posture. He’s absolutely stunning in the movie."
  • Unlike the Ash Clan, Scott tells Empire that when it comes to the Wind Traders, “Everyone’s excited to see them. It’s like the circus is in town."
  • Directed by James Cameron, Avatar: Fire and Ash is produced by 20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment and also stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Oona Chaplin and Bailey Bass.
  • Avatar: Fire and Ash opens December 19th, 2025.
