Veteran ABC News Correspondent Elizabeth Nissen Passes Away at the Age of 71

She is remembered for her sharp intellect, deep understanding, empathy, and talent for building relationships through extensive correspondence.

Veteran ABC News correspondent Elizabeth Nissen passed away on January 7, just three days following her 71st birthday, at her residence in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

She was a veteran correspondent with extensive experience in reporting on news, war, sports science, and the arts, having worked across a range of media platforms throughout her career. Her contributions included network television at ABC News for shows like World News Tonight" and "Nightline, cable news with CNN's NewsNight, public television on WGBH's Nova Science Now, as well as online platforms such as CNN.com and NBCLearn.com, and print media including The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. Furthermore, she co-founded NBC Learn, the educational division of NBC News, where she also held the position of senior producer.

Beth, a passionate reader, learner, and educator, was committed to presenting information in an easily understandable way. She took on the role of a caregiver, embodying the responsibilities of the eldest sibling. Furthermore, she actively participated in her local Rotary Club and was a member of The Adelphies group at 1st Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor at the time of her passing.

She is remembered for her keen intellect, deep insight, compassion, and her talent for fostering friendships through her extensive correspondence. Moreover, she was an enthusiastic supporter of the Wolverines and the Lions.

She is survived by five of her six siblings: Mary Nissen Whaley and her spouse, Jay; Anna Nissen Barrett and her spouse, Tim; James Nissen; Eva Nissen Lewin; and Steve Nissen. Although she did not have children, she was a cherished aunt to nine nieces and nephews, who all held her in high regard and affection. She was preceded by her brother Jon in 1995, her mother Patricia A. Bonnet in 1997, and her father Eugene W. Nissen in 2021.

As per Beth's request, there will be no memorial service held at this time.
