Theater Review: “The Book of Mormon” at Dr. Phillips Center

The Broadway smash hit The Book of Mormon recently made a triumphant return to ORLANDO and the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, captivating the audience with its uproarious humor and poignant social commentary. Certain shows just hit differently in different cities: Chicago in Chicago, 42 Street in New York, and of course, The Book of Mormon” in Orlando. I have to say the energy level was off the charts for the entire performance.

For those of you not familiar with the story, in a nutshell, two young Mormans embark on their two-year mission to Uganda to spread the word of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints — and hilarity and hijinks ensue. Adam Bailey as Elder Price, Sam Glen as Elder Cunningham, and Nyah Nish as Nabulungi may be the leads, but this cast is so rich and powerful that every member of the ensemble could and at times does steal the spotlight.

Created in 2011 by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (known for their work on South Park) and someone most Disney fans may know, Bobby Lopez (of Frozen fame), this show is just the best time you will have in a theater laughing at warlords, dysentery, and religious beliefs. Warning: this brand of humor is not for the easily offended or even those not so easily offended but the result is a side-splitting performance that has had audiences roaring with laughter from beginning to end and this current tour is no different.

The Book of Mormon is a must-see theatrical experience and if you last through the entire show you are the type of person I want to hang out with! The show is not only hilarious but also thought-provoking, and full of music you will be listening to for a long time to come.

Tickets are still available for performances at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Art, but if you are not in the Orlando area be sure you make the mission to see this amazing show when it is near you.
