Disney's California Adventure ™ Debuts Breathtaking Supernatural Adventure

“The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror,? a thrilling and chilling supernatural adventure based on “a lost episode? of the classic Twilight Zone® television series, will have its official grand opening on Wednesday, May 5, 2004 in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area of Disney's California Adventure, it was announced by Matt Ouimet, president of the Disneyland ® Resort.

“We're very excited to share this amazing new attraction with our guests at Disney's California Adventure,? Ouimet said. “The detailed craftsmanship of the building, incredible set design and visual effects, intriguing story and the hair-raising ride itself are sure to instantly make ‘ Tower of Terror ' one of our signature attractions here at the Disneyland Resort.?

Looming 183 feet (the tallest attraction at the Disneyland Resort) over Disney's California Adventure and tempting guests to leave reality behind is the Hollywood Tower Hotel, site of the terrifying, other-worldly experience that is “The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.? The crumbly yet still stately landmark exhibits an air of foreboding, especially to sharp-eyed guests who may notice that part of the building seems to have been struck by an oddly violent bolt of lightening, exposing the elevator shafts.

Guests enter through the once-grand lobby of the hotel (with a mysterious past) and are then ushered into a musty library by one of the hotel's droll “bellhops.? In the library guests experience a unique invitation to board one of the hotel's service elevators, where they find themselves on a terrifying journey to - - The Twilight Zone.

Obviously, this is no ordinary elevator ride. Guests experience a series of frightening phenomena before their climactic free fall into fear . Each ride offers a “faster-than-the-speed-of-gravity? drop from the 13 th floor and amazing special effects that will leave guests clinging to the edge of reality and wanting to do it over and over and over, if they dare.

The original version of “The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror? opened at the Disney-MGM Studios in Walt Disney World in 1994. It instantly became the most popular attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort and continues to delight and terrify guests.

“Imagineers raise the bar with each new attraction we create, and the California ‘Twilight Zone Tower of Terror' features new special effects and surprises for our guests,? said Barry Braverman, senior vice president, Walt Disney Imagineering. “The lavish detail on display in this attraction, from the new exterior design to the 1930s décor of the hotel lobby and library to the elevators themselves, puts this attraction on par with our other classic adventures, such as ‘Pirates of the Caribbean' or ‘Haunted Mansion.'?

“Wherever you go in the park, you can look up and see elevator cabs full of exhilarated screaming guests. We've brought the Twilight Zone story to life in an incredibly compelling, thrilling and very memorable way,? said Cory Sewelson, Walt Disney Imagineering senior show producer for the attraction.

“The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror? will feature Disney's FASTPASS ® , an innovative and complimentary system designed to reduce wait times at popular attractions in both Disneyland Resort theme parks. FASTPASS kiosks provide guests with a voucher listing a computer-assigned boarding time. This alternative to waiting in line allows guests to enjoy other aspects of the park before returning to experience their chosen attraction at the designated boarding time.

The DISNEYLAND ® Resort features two theme parks - DISNEYLAND Park , “The Happiest Place on Earth,? and DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE™Park that captures the excitement of California through Disney storytelling - a place where Disney magic meets California fun. DOWNTOWN DISNEY ® District is a public esplanade of dining, family entertainment and shopping. Hotels include the luxurious 745-room Disney's Grand Californian Hotel ® , the 489-room Disney's Paradise Pier ® Hotel, and the 990-room Disneyland Hotel.
