"We're All Ears"

LaughingPlace.com is a business and as a business there's no question one of our primary goals is to make money. And anyone who follows the business pages knows it can be very tough for a content-based website - like this one - to make money on the Internet these days. However, thus far we've been very pleased with how LaughingPlace.com is working out financially. Hopefully that will continue for a long time to come. But even if it doesn't, I think it would take a LOT for Rebekah and I to give up LaughingPlace.com. Why??? I'll sum it up in one sentence - "We get to do cool things and meet cool people!"

Take, for example, last Saturday night...

Actually, I need to go back about three more weeks, back to when LaughingPlace.com was about to have its 100th Trivia Contest and we decided to celebrate with Trivia Week. Rebekah thought it would be a great idea to interview Mike Cook, the host of one of our favorite radio shows, "Hooked on Trivia". "Hooked on Trivia" is a radio game show out of San Diego where callers answer questions for points to become eligible for and win the weekly drawing. Rebekah and I have listened to the show for a couple of years - usually after going to Disneyland - because it keeps us awake and there's quite a bit of Disney trivia on it. Mike happily agreed to be interviewed and he also visited the site which he was quite impressed with - so impressed, in fact, that he asked us to come on the air to talk about it and to do some Disney trivia. So we set a date of July 7th, I wrote a bunch of trivia questions and that brings us to last Saturday night...

Rebekah and I were very nervous before the show. I had never been on the radio or television before and Rebekah had a little more experience, but not much. We went extra early and had dinner first then drove to the studio. Within 10 minutes of getting inside we had headphones on and were ready to go - Mike doesn't waste any time! As soon as we got the on the air I relaxed a lot and had a great time. I had a grin on my face that didn't leave until hours after the show ended. We were originally scheduled to be on the show from 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., but the hour went so well we were held over for three more hours. Before we finally left at 1:30 a.m. we had the opportunity to talk about the site, talk about Disney, meet Mike's wonderful family, ask dozens of trivia questions and talk to several LP readers who called in during the show. If you listened to the show you may not have heard much excitement from Rebekah and me when LPers called because we weren't sure how much we should say on the air, but in the studio we were high-fiving each other. It was very exciting! It was also great to hear from the people who had never heard of the show until reading our site and vice-versa. He's got a very dedicated audience - as do we - and I hope it's beneficial to our respective audiences to be introduced to each other's products.

Sadly, after four hours, it was time to make the 90 minute drive home. We knew we had a great time and judging by the calls it seemed the audience enjoyed it, but still - you never know. Well today we found out Mike is very interested in having us come on as a regular feature (every 1-2 months or so). We're already working on a date for August and we'll be sure to let you know when it's set. Mike also let us know last Saturday's show would be rebroadcast this Saturday as he'll be on a mini-vacation. He's not yet sure of the exact hours (as I mentioned, Saturday hours can vary), but sometime Saturday night we'll definitely be on. If we get definite times, we'll let you know.
Update: Our segment will be rebroadcast on Saturday, July 14th from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. "Hooked on Trivia" will come on at 9:00 a.m. with an unrelated segment then switch to our rebroadast at 9:30p.m.

Being on "Hooked on Trivia" is just the latest in a long time of wonderful things we've been able to do since starting LaughingPlace.com. But much more importantly, we've been able to meet some wonderful people in the process (and that includes readers and staff members). Mike Cook and his family are just the latest bunch. Rebekah and I are very, very lucky to be the owners of LaughingPlace.com regardless of the business side of things.

"Hooked on Trivia" can be heard on 760AM KFMB. It airs Monday through Friday 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and Saturday 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m (Saturday hours sometimes vary). The show originates in San Diego but can be heard over a much wider area - six states, in fact, depending on several factors. It will also return to the Internet as soon as is possible. So even if you're hundreds of miles away, give it a try. You too might get hooked.
