Living the Disney Life

That's What Friends Are For
December 1 & 3, 2006

While most of my working life is spent on LaughingPlace, I do still have some programming clients from my previous life that I have to do some work with. Unfortunately, last week was one of the those weeks where the work piled up and I had very little time in the parks. I definitely missed it and look forward to getting back there this week and seeing the rest of Christmas around The World.

Usually Friday nights are family nights and we have dinner either at our place or someplace simple like IHOP. But this past Friday it was just Rebekah and I so we took the opportunity to go someplace new. Well, not completely new, we had been there for lunch, but the first time for dinner. We headed to the Turf Club at Saratoga Springs - probably the newest table service restaurant on property. It opened a few months ago - well after the hotel itself opened - adding a much needed table service restaurant at this Disney Vacation Club resort. I don't remember our lunch experience there being anything special, but that was right after it opened. This dinner experience was much better. The atmosphere was a little louder than we'd like, but the food was really wonderful. We had Onion Rings with 3 dipping sauces then I had a great pasta and vegetable dish that wasn't the least bit saucy or heavy, yet I still loved it - quite a rarity. Rebekah had the burger and said it may have been better than even the Grand Floridian Cafe. And the best part - we went on the spur of the moment around 7:30p and were sat right away. Being a local, it's very important to find those places where you can always get a seat yet still have great food. Another one for the rotation!

Back in our old Disneyland days our typical trip to the park consisted of a lot of sitting and talking to friends. I miss those kinds of trips. So I was very happy we decided to go to the LP Meet on Sunday at Epcot. davewasbaloo, u k fan, Kennesaw Tom and -em (and their respective families) all met at the Seas with Nemo and Friends to enjoy the new attraction and Soarin' before going our separate ways. But in between the two attractions a couple of  hours were spent at Sunshine Seasons (that's some good fast food!!!) inside the The Land just talking about Disney and many other things with new (for us, anyway) LP friends. It was a really great times - thanks everyone!

The ride on Soarin, however, was a little scary. Does this happen to anyone else? I remember my first ride on Soarin' at DCA in 2001. I was terrified dangling that high off the ground and constantly pushed myself back in my chair, taking deep breaths and occasionally closing my eyes. After a few rides I got comfortable and it was not different than sitting on the ground. But whenever I take a break from riding (which is often since the line's so long), it's like returning to start. The ride yesterday had me gripping the whole time and reminding myself to breathe. But that didn't detract too much, it's still my favorite attraction in any Disney park and an almost perfect Disney family attraction (the only real problem being the height restriction).

So that was my weekend. I could use more Disney, but all-in-all, a very nice Disney weekend!
