What Makes a Great Monster?: The character designers introduce the design gallery found in the …

Character Design Gallery: Individual galleries for every monster imaginable, most with cool ‘Turn-Around’ views. Of note:

  • Sulley underwent the biggest evolution, inhabiting at various stages vastly different sizes, shapes and colors.
  • On the other hand, Mike was pretty much a walking eyeball from day one, although at one point, he was armless.
  • Celia originally had two heads, both with snakes for hair.
  • Jerry, the seven-fingered Scare Floor dispatcher, was originally female.
  • In the Monster Wannabees section, a wide variety of eventually cut monster designs is featured, most showing a distinctly Maurice Sendak influence.

Design:

Monstropolis: Where it is revealed that the early stages of design for a computer animated film is very much like a traditionally animated film, with lots of concept art.

Setting the Scene:

Set Dressing: A new Pixar department created for the production of Monsters, the set dressers in a computer animated film are just like their live action counterparts, adding furniture, props, et cetera into the virtual ‘sets’ to add that ‘lived-in’ feel.

Step Through: Watch how the set dressing process works in these progression videos for various set pieces, including Mike and Sulley’s apartment, Roz’s office and Boo’s room.

Color Scripts: Gallery of concept art showing the use of color to establish mood and emotions for each scene.

Master Lighting: Another gallery, compares the concept art to the final artwork.

Location Flyarounds: Something cool that computer animated films can do that really no other medium can, viewers take a ‘virtual tour’ of the ‘sets’ of Monsters, Inc., with a few clever cameos. (Doesn’t Roz ever go home?)

Monstropolis Art: Yet another gallery, this one includes concept art for the various locations of the film, including an unused idea for a Monsters, Inc. rival called Tooth Faeries, Inc.

Guide to In-Jokes: Here you’ll find out what’s in the Monsters, Inc. snack machine, the menu for Harryhausen’s Sushi Restaurant and (gasp!) Boo’s real name. Also, spot the Pixar cameos, including Jessie from Toy Story 2, the Luxo, Jr. ball and Nemo, the star of Pixar’s next feature, Finding Nemo.
