News and Rumors

Disney has confirmed the Osborne Family Lights will be returning to Disney-MGM Studios this year despite the construction for Lights! Motors! Action! They'll be moved to New York Street which itself is undergoing a transformation to represent other cities as well. That transformation will not be complete by the holidays, but the lights will be setup nonetheless. Yippee! (really!)

Screamscape is reporting filming recently took place in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland to be used in Stitch's Great Escape. Visit the site to read more on this interesting development.

At Disney-MGM Studios Playhouse Disney's JoJo and Goliath have been added to the Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade. They'll also begin doing meet and greets this summer.

The Disney Bear, Mickey Mouse's very own Teddy Bear who has become famous in plush form, can now be seen at Once Upon a Toy at Downtown Disney Wednesday through Saturday between 4:30p and 8p.

Author and Disney Historian Michael Broggie sent me the following note to pass along:

I had a telephone conversation with Trevor Larson, v.p. for all mechanical and transportation maintenance at WDW. He needs to find several steam train technical personnel to replace the retiring maintenance crew at the WDW Railroad. George Britton is retiring after more than 34 years at WDWRR as shop foreman. He may stay on as a consultant (an excellent idea since he know more about the care and feeding of those beautiful engines than all the other technicians combined). Would you please post an announcement that the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society is helping to locate qualified candidates for several positions required to maintain the engines and rolling stock in excellence condition. These jobs pay various union scales and include full family benefits, shift bonus and other perks. Plus, they get to work on the best Baldwin steam locomotives operating daily in the country. Anyone interested should send me e-mail at [email protected].

Happy Birthday to the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review which turns 30 years old on June 14th. And I'm promising myself I'll finally see this show before it turns 31.

Another happy birthday, this time to Cirque du Soleil, which celebrated five years last week. This one I have seen ... and will see again before it turns six. To celebrate, Disney has announced six-month series of special events. Among them, Florida resident discounts, a behind-the-scenes photo gallery, a jam session by the talented musicians of Cirque and more. See the official press release for more details.

Someone must be busy in September, because the Wilderness Lodge recently had a birthday as well. As mentioned last week It turned 10 years old last Friday. This event we were at and we'll have coverage in an upcoming Walt Disney World Update.

A couple of minor changes - Sunglass Icon has opened at Downtown Disney Westside and the Starring Rolls Bakery at Disney-MGM Studios is now Starring Rolls Cafe. It has been remodeled and now serves sandwiches, salads, baked goods and coffee treats.

Event Updates

Gay Days Orlando 2004 began yesterday and continues through Monday at Walt Disney World and several other Central Florida attractions. For a complete schedule, click here for the official site.

There will be a Goebel Signing Event at the Germany pavilion in Epcot on June 5th and 6th from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Speaking of Germany, Rebekah and I took a walk all around the World Showcase yesterday and we finally ate at San Angel Inn. We also found a great perfume in Norway. And while in Germany we poked our head inside Biergarten while looking for ... oh, never mind.  But we also saw a sign advertising this event. And now I'm reporting it to you. Hard work, I tell ya! Anyway, click here for more info on the signing.

This is the last weekend for Epcot's International Flower and Garden Festival. Lovin's Spoonful will be performing the Flower Power concerts. And this is the second to the last weekend for Star Wars Weekends at Disney-MGM Studios.

First there was Super Soap, then Star Wars, then ABC Primetime Preview. Now comes the latest "weekend" to hit Disney - ESPN The Weekend July 31st and August 1st at Disney-MGM Studios. ESPN personalities, special editions of "Millionaire-Play It", Highlights Theater and even ... "ESPN  The Truck!" All to celebrate 25 years of Doobie's favorite network. DA da da, DA da da here for the details.
