E-Ticket Magazine

The Fall, 1999 issue of E-Ticket Magazine was released in July of this year. It contains 41 pages with 28 of them being devoted to Pirates of the Caribbean. The issue contains two long stories on Pirates, the first is an interview with Imagineer and Disney legend Marc Davis, the second a detailed trip through the attraction.

The first article is entitled A Marc Davis Sketchbook, and with good reason. It contains dozen his sketches, many of them with the original annotations character and scene look and movement. Davis speaks in detail on the sketches and also talks about the development of the look of the pirates and why they couldn't be historically accurate. He also talks about why it was so important for the attraction to be humorous.

Davis also talks about what he really liked about the attraction, and even some things he didn't like. Davis says "There are some things that I think we did wrong on the attraction, and I would go back and change them if I could. I don't like the 'bicycle action' of the runners running up there. I did like the way the 'girl in the barrel' scene came out ... that was completely mine. I don't like the fact that when the ride is over, you have to sit at the bottom of the ramp and then chug, chug, chugging up this and hill and then out."

Davis concludes with some memories of Walt's desire to make everything the highest quality. He recounted the following conversation with Walt. Speaking of the auctioneer "He had all the little mouth movements and all that, and I mentioned to Walt that I thought it was a 'Hell of a waste." Walt said, 'No Marc, it's not a waste ... we do so much return business down here, and the next time people come in they'll see something they hadn't noticed before."

The second article is a scene-by-scene tour through Pirates of the Caribbean complete with many beautiful pictures of the interior. The tour is interspersed with comments and background information gleaned from Imagineers interviewed by E-Ticket Magazine over the years.
