In this ‘Toon Talk’ feature, I will briefly highlight a recommended film or DVD, outside of the Disney universe, of similar interest to the main subject. Sure-fire Sherwood Shenanigans One of the true swashbuckling classics, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938, Warner) is the best in a long-line of cinematic retellings of the legend of the ace bowman. Errol Flynn is in fine form as the prince of thieves, with the radiant Olivia de Havilland as his lady love and the sneer-worthy Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains as the bad guys. You’ll feel like a kid again here watching the Technicolor escapades of Robin and his Merry Men. Directed by Michael Curtiz, the film won three Academy Awards, including one for its iconic score. A two-disc special edition DVD is available from Warner Home Video, as is a recent high definition disc. (Rated PG.) |
