New Pop Century Resort at Walt Disney World Will Send Guests on Pop Culture Time Trip

Update: Disney has announced the opening of the Pop Century Resort has been pushed back to March 2002.

A new hotel to be built at Walt Disney World Resort will send guests on a trip through American popular culture with larger-than-life icons that recall the way we lived and played and communicated during each decade of the 20th century.

Disney's Pop Century Resort will have 5,760 rooms spread across 20 buildings. It will be built in two phases, with the first phase of 2,880 rooms scheduled to open in winter 2001/2002.

Each pair of buildings in the resort will be themed to a different decade, from the 1900s to the 1990s. Cultural touchstones from each era -- a giant jukebox for the 1950s and a huge yo-yo for the 1960s, for instance -- will mark the entrances. Silhouettes illustrating dances of the decade adorn the front of each building, and the roofs are lined with catch-phrases of the time.

The resort will be located in the northeast quadrant of Osceola Parkway and Victory Way, just south of Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

Disney's Pop Century Resort will join the 5,760 rooms of Disney’s All-Star Resorts in offering Walt Disney World guests accommodations in the value category, currently priced from $74-$104 per room, per night.

"We are excited to add to the success of our All-Star Resorts," said Al Weiss, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Guests have really responded to the whimsical architecture and fun atmosphere of the All-Star, and they really appreciate all the extras that come with staying at a Disney resort."

Disney resort guests enjoy amenities such as complimentary transportation throughout property and early entrance to Disney theme parks on select days.

"From a business perspective," Weiss added, "this new resort is consistent with our ongoing strategy of developing assets which provide both increased cash flow and total value of our property."

Together with Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, opening in spring 2001, Disney's Pop Century Resort when completed will bring the total number of guest rooms at Walt Disney World Resort to more than 33,000. A total of 19 resorts with more than 27,000 rooms will be Walt Disney World owned and operated. Currently, Disney owned and operated guest rooms total more than 20,000 in 17 resorts.
