Club Penguin players can donate the virtual coins they earn playing games to real world causes during the 4th annual Coins for Change beginning December 17. At the end of the event, December 27 the players’ virtual donations will be used to determine how Disney Online Studios will divide a $1M contribution among various pre-selected charitable projects.
“The kids who play Club Penguin have already helped more than two million people get medical care, enabled 200,000 children to go to school and helped protect more than a dozen endangered species and their habitats, and we’re confident they’ll rise to the challenge again this year,” says Lane Merrifield, one of Club Penguin’s co-founders and executive vice president of Disney Online Studios.
The Disney Company purchased Club Penguin and its developer New Horizon Interactive in August 2007.
